| All About Crete Greece is known for many things including its many fascinating islands. Each island has its own unique character but of all the Greek islands none attracts more praise from tourists and travellers than the beautiful island of Crete. Crete is the largest of Greece's many islands, and it offers an incredible range of attractions that keep visitors coming back again and again. The natural beauty of the island attracts travellers from far and wide. With its rugged sea gorges, snow-capped mountains, fertile plains and excellent beaches, no visitor can fail to be impressed by the natural beauty of Crete. The busy capital of Crete, Heraklion, has evolved into a developed and dynamic city with all the facilities and conveniences that you'd expect to find in any modern city. The old city of Chania, to the west, has been likened to a 'Little Venice', with its Venetian Harbour. Both Heraklion and Chania, Crete's second largest city, have international and domestic airports that make it easy to get to the island from Athens on the mainland and also from other European cities including London, where Ryanair and Easyjet operate direct summer services between the UK and Crete. Accommodation is well developed in Heraklion, Chania and Rethymon towns as well as in other areas of the island. From luxury hotels and villas to more modest family-run apartments and traditional cottages, Crete offers a wide range of comfortable, safe and convenient places to stay for visitors. Cretan food, too, is world class and is famous not only for being delicious and highly varied, but also for being healthy. For history and culture lovers, Crete is hard to beat. The ancient Minoan civilisation was established here almost 5,000 years ago, and the ruins of the Minoan Palace of Knossos, located not far from Heraklion, are a 'must see' for any visitor. Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and other occupations through the ages have all left their mark and add to Crete's historical richness. Old mosques and Byzantine monasteries can be found throughout Crete, and traditional and authentic Cretan music and dress survive intact in many village locations. There's no shortage of things to see and do in Crete. Samaria gorge is the longest in Europe and definitely worth seeing. Snorkelling and diving, with professional instruction is available across the island, and is very popular. Wonderful restaurants, vibrant city nightlife, fascinating culture and rich history coupled with the welcoming warmth of Cretan hospitality make any stay in Crete seem far too short. For any traveller, no trip to Greece is complete without a trip to some of its fascinating islands, and no trip to the Greek islands would be complete without visiting Crete, the most fascinating island of all.
